Check the ukulele before choosing a tuning lesson
Identify the instrument and string set so your lesson starts in the right place.
Write the instrument’s full model name at the top of your practice notes. “Ukulele” is not enough information to choose every tuning diagram: Kala distinguishes standard soprano, concert and tenor tuning from baritone tuning. Match the lesson to your instrument before turning any tuning peg.
Check the fitted string set and its intended tuning, particularly on a second-hand instrument. If that information is missing, ask the maker or a qualified instrument shop. Do not use string colour, body colour or a product photograph as a substitute for identification.
Place the tuning reference where you can read it without losing track of the string. Work methodically, check the note name and octave indicated by your reference, and follow the instrument and string maker’s directions. A tuner reading should be interpreted with the correct setup in mind.
Once the instrument is ready, practise a short passage from the matching lesson and note any question for next time. Keep equipment research separate from playing time: a clearly identified instrument and a focused exercise are a useful starting pair.
