Plan one manageable container
Choose a position, a plant and a watering routine before buying more tools.
Begin with one container you can reach easily. Observe the proposed spot at several times during a normal day, then note exposure and access to water. A sunny-looking photograph of a balcony cannot tell you what happens there throughout the afternoon. Match the plant’s stated needs to your observations rather than choosing a pot first and hoping everything fits.
The RHS container guide is a useful reference for drainage and growing media. For your own plan, write down the container dimensions, the chosen plant and where excess water will go. Keep the route around the container clear, and consider whether you can move it before filling it.
Prepare a small work area with a tray for spilled material. A hand trowel is a relevant tool, but the container and plant determine whether its size is useful. Do not buy a full tool collection to solve a single planting task.
After planting, keep brief notes about conditions and your care decisions. Review the plant and growing medium rather than following a rigid calendar copied from another climate. Start another container only once you know how this one fits your week.
